Calculate studs and materials needed
This calculator determines the number of studs, plates, and headers needed to frame a wall, accounting for doors and windows.
Standard Framing Components:
• Studs: Vertical members spaced 16" or 24" on
center
• Top Plates: Two horizontal members at top (double
top plate)
• Bottom Plate: Single horizontal member at floor
• Headers: Support beam above doors/windows
• Cripples: Short studs above/below openings
• King Studs: Full-height studs beside openings
• Jack Studs: Support studs under headers
Stud Spacing:
• 16" on center: Standard for most walls, better
support
• 24" on center: Used for non-load bearing walls,
saves lumber
• 12" on center: Load-bearing walls, high wind areas
Door/Window Framing: Each opening needs:
• 2 king studs (full height)
• 2 jack studs (trimmer studs)
• 1 header (doubled 2x material)
• Cripple studs above/below on 16" centers
Waste Factor: Always add 10-15% extra for:
• Damaged lumber
• Cutting errors
• Special framing (corners, intersections)
• Blocking and backing
Important notes:
• Use 2x6 for exterior walls (better insulation)
• 2x4 sufficient for most interior walls
• Check local codes for spacing requirements
• Headers must be sized for span and load
How to use: Enter wall dimensions, select stud spacing and size, add number of doors and windows. Calculator provides complete material list including plates, studs, and framing lumber for openings.
